💃 Thai Culture in Northwestern Vietnam and the Xoè Dance

Thai cultural creations are characterized by a Thai cultural identity that converges in the Northwestern Vietnamese cultural region, located in the provinces of Yên Bái. This is the ancient land of the Thai people. They have long lived in villages and cultivated wet rice as their main source of living.

📜 Spiritual Life and Beliefs

Thai people have a very rich spiritual life in which Xoè dance is considered particularly important.

Thai people follow polytheism; they believe that in the surrounding world there are many supernatural forces that can affect human life. Every year before planting crops, villagers conduct rituals to thank the gods and pray for support in the new planting year.

✨ Xoè Dance: The Soul of the Culture

The Xoè dance is performed as a means for people to pay homage to their gods, communicating their deep desires.

Thai Xoè lets them share happiness and sympathy with their community with the hope that the community will feel more attached and strong.

Forms and Development

The most popular form of Thai Xoè dance is called Circle Xoè dance (Xoè vòng), which is accompanied by a lively drum melody. It is widely used; almost every important cultural event has this dance. Round Xoè dances are performed frequently, especially when the Thai villagers celebrate the new Spring Festival.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the art of Xoè Bổng dance had an important development across the Big Chao and Muang regions. Troops of Xoè dance were established. In addition to acquiring and enhancing traditional Xoè dance, the musicians and dancers at that time created many new Xoè styles imbued with Thai cultural soul and personality.

🌿 Preservation and Vitality

Thai people today attach great importance to the Xoè dance heritage of their grandparents. They are constantly adding new creations, bringing intense vitality to the art of Xoè dance in contemporary life.
